Robert Floyd invites you to see and acquire some Black South artwork by Julius Lester.
SNCC sent Julius Lester to the South to photograph what he experienced. The Black South collection of 50 photographs was the result. It traveled to Princeton University, The Robert Floyd Gallery, and the Monson House of Art.
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC0 was the main channel of student commitment in the United States to the civil rights movement during the 1960s. Emerging in 1960 from the student-led sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Nashville, Tennessee, the Committee sought to coordinate and assist direct-action challenges to the civic segregation and political exclusion of African Americans.
We will exhibit some of these iconic images, a few at a time. As they sell, we will share more with you.
Image: This image of a woman quilting was made in the same space as the photographs of Reverend Pitts and his wife. There is a second woman working on the quilt, but I could not fit her into this frame, and the individual photograph of her was not successful.
