Artist Statement Meredith Jones
The earth is an interconnected system. Its rocks, soil, water, atmospheric gases and organisms ceaselessly interact, shaping and maintaining a life-sustaining environment. As the most predatory and consumptive of species, we have rapaciously damaged and destroyed the delicately balanced life system of our planet. By polluting the oceans, streams and lakes, leveling forests, stripping fields, emitting greenhouse gases and more, we have upset and continue to upset the dynamic balance that has taken billions of years to achieve.
My photographs are my visceral response to what remains, embedded with the hope that all will not be lost after I am gone. What we know, and what I knew as a child, has and will continue to change. These changes are palpable. I see and feel the beauty in what remains: shape, form, light, and mystery.
