Artist’s Statement
When I am asked what I photograph, I say anything that strikes my eye. What I should say is anything that strikes my soul. Whatever I photograph -- objects, people, or creatures -- I am not only photographing what I see, I am photographing my relationship with what I see. In a sense, then, I am photographing myself.
However, an image becomes real to me only when I print it. I love Photoshop because I can do more with an image using it than I ever could in the wet darkroom. With Photoshop I have a broader visual language available. I am able to experiment and play with an image until I feel that I have found the best way to express the relationship between myself and the projection of self in the image. Sometimes the result is a straight documentary photograph which shows what was. Sometimes the image bears faint resemblance to what I saw with the physical eye. Every photograph is a choice made by the photographer’s eye as well as the stories the photographer carries inside.
I call this exhibit “Ways of Seeing II” because I do not see just one subject or in one way. I let the image tell me how it wants to express itself, and I sit for hours and hours in front of the computer exploring the visual possibilities in a given image.
I suspect that we all have “ways of seeing” because each of us carries many stories within us. Through our stories we see ourselves, others and the world around us. These images are merely some of the ways in which I see.
